Dog Eared Books, Castro

489 Castro Street San Francisco, CA

Since opening its doors June 1, 2016, this new San Francisco gem has amassed the largest LGBT selection in all of Northern California according to Alvin Orloff, who has worked for the company since 1999.

Being in this space is a treat in itself. I swear, as soon as I walked in to do this interview, my day immediately turned around. The openness--and I mean that in both senses of the word--reels you in.

Where else can you find the Children's books A is For Activist and Feminist Baby prominently displayed in the cozy kid's nook?

But all the little nooks of this space are just as wonderful. Alvin deliberated for a good minute when asked for his favorite section of the store... and still only was able to narrow it down to three: "That's so hard! It's a three way tie between History, Creative Non-Fiction and Gay Fiction..

The owner of G.F. Wilkinson books loves that people can casually browse his collection on their smoke break.

Owner G. F. Wilkinson is "exposing the public to agelessness" in more ways than one.

His bookstore--the truest definition of "hole in the wall" I've ever encountered-- gets its origins from yesteryear's book selling in Great Britain, Paris and China, when book sellers stood on the street with their books and a throw blanket.

G. F. Wilkinson Books in the San Francisco Financial District

Here, you'll find vintage books of all categories (case in point: conservative and progressive books share equal window space in today's display) in gorgeous condition at the best prices you're going to find. In fact, he challenges people to find the same book online for less!

As if this space weren't cool enough, soon he's going to give up one of the windows to share it with a news and art group that will also do readings. He says, "They're going to do a lot of great stuff, lots of energy, youth."

Check it out online at GFWilkinsonbooks.com-- if you find anything you like, he'll make sure to bring it down to the store for you.

Valencia Dog Eared holds a special place in my heart. It was my first bookstore love in this amazing city. It's a timeless love, which is why I was so thrilled to hear that they're doing so well.

They're celebrating 25 years on October 26, 2017 and we're all invited to the party! There will be free booze and 25% off discounts well into the night (or, at least until they close at 10PM)!

If you've ever been, you know they have a big table smack in the center of the right side of the store that always brimming with amazing books at a discounted price. "I think we have the best remainders in town. Remainders are publisher overstock books and we spend a lot of time getting really good ones," says Ryan Smith, who's worked for Dog Eared the last 12 years.

His current literary love: Satantango by Laszlo Krasznahorkai.
